Bell : Next Year’s Budget Adopted With Cuts Totaling $61,000
The City Council on Tuesday adopted next year’s budget after two hours of debate in which council members voted to slash another $61,000 out of the already meager budget.
The council voted to cut the 1990-91 budget from $5.385 million to $5.324 million by trimming the amount of money budgeted for attorney fees, council and staff travel to conferences, and the city’s public information office. The budget was further reduced by the transfer of funds to the Community Redevelopment Agency, which Bell officials are trying to strengthen in hope that in the next few years the agency will create a prosperous business climate in the tax-poor city.
The council also voted to go ahead with its plan to lay off seven maintenance workers and cut most of the Parks and Recreation Department programs because of an estimated $190,000 deficit.
“It’s tough doing this,” Mayor George Cole said. “It’s not a happy time to be faced with such financial difficulty.”
