Final Qualifying for U.S. Speedway Title Tonight

The final qualifying round for the speedway motorcycle U.S. Championship is scheduled for 8 tonight at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Defending U.S. champion Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa and 1985 champion Alan Christian of Murrieta are tied with 39 points after qualifying rounds at Cal Expo in Sacramento and Victorville.

Phil Collins of Manchester, England, is third with 38 points, followed by Steve Lucero of Riverside and Mike Faria of Colton with 30 each. Former British Speedway League star Lance King has struggled to score 13 points.

Jim Sisemore of Woodland, the top Northern California rider, will return tonight after suffering a broken collarbone. Sisemore scored 16 points at Sacramento but missed the second qualifier at Victorville.

The top-scoring 14 riders will join Billy Hamill and Rick Miller in the field for the championship in Costa Mesa on Oct. 6.
