Ferdinand (Andy) Geiger, athletic director at Stanford since 1979, today was named athletic director at the University of Maryland.

Geiger, 51, succeeds Lew Perkins, who resigned in July to take the athletic director’s post at the University of Connecticut.

Geiger, whose job becomes effective Oct. 1, takes over an athletic department racked by years of controversy and problems, including budget constraints and serious NCAA sanctions now faced by the men’s basketball program.

Stanford faced no recruitment violations or other related problems with the NCAA during Geiger’s tenure.

“I spent my life committed to athletics, and Maryland presents a challenge that I have not faced in my career,” Geiger said. “A friend of mine at Stanford said people are like plants. It’s good to be repotted once in a while, and I felt I needed a new beginning.”

Since 1979, Stanford has won 27 collegiate national championships, the most in the country. Terms of Geiger’s contract were not disclosed.
