GOLF ROUNDUP : Mayfair Shoots His Second 65 to Lead by One

Billy Mayfair shot his second consecutive five-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the second round of the $1-million Hardee’s tournament at Coal Valley, Ill.

Mayfair, 24, of Phoenix, lost a playoff last week at the Greater Milwaukee Open and finished fifth in the PGA Championship. He is still looking for his first victory after 18 months on the PGA Tour.

Mayfair’s 10-under-par 130 total was a stroke ahead of Willie Wood and Jay Delsing after 36 holes.

Defending champion Rives McBee shot a six-under-par 66 to lead after the first round of the Bank One Senior golf tournament at Lexington, Ky.

McBee, who recorded his first Senior victory in the 1989 Bank One tournament, finished with seven birdies over the Kearney Hill Golf Links. He leads Quinton Gray, Dave Hill, Terry Dill and Orville Moody by two strokes.

Ian Woosnam shot a two-under-par 68 to lead after two rounds of the European Open golf championship at Sunningdale, England. Among those one stroke back was Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain.

Dottie Mochrie shot a four-under-par 68 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Ping-Cellular One Golf Championship in Portland, Ore.

Sherri Turner, Betsy King and Nancy Brown were tied for second at three-under 69 in a round that featured holes in one by Turner and Laura Hurlbut on the par-three, 134-yard 13th hole at Columbia-Edgewater Country Club.
