From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

The condition of the Amante quadruplets was upgraded today to “fair,” UC Irvine Medical Center officials said.

The four babies--three girls and a boy--were born to Consolacion (Solly) Amante, 28, of Santa Ana by Cesarean section about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The rare multiple births were natural--not caused by any fertility drugs or treatment.

Elaine Beno, spokeswoman for the medical center, said the boy, Jeremy Stuart, is the only quad still being assisted with oxygen in his crib. At birth, the quads were considered to be “serious but stable.”

The baby’s father, Oscar Amante, 30, has been given the week off by his employer, an Irvine computer-printer manufacturer. The couple has two other children, a 4-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter.
