Countywide : Builders Help Repair Shelter for Women

Share

A builders’ group whose members have constructed some of the priciest homes in Ventura County kicked off a project Thursday to aid people who can least afford expensive property.

The Building Industry Assn. of Southern California Inc. launched its HomeAid campaign by announcing a $12,820 project to remodel a kitchen in a shelter for battered women run by the Ventura County Coalition Against Household Violence.

Officials of the 1,000-member organization said the campaign in Ventura County is similar to efforts by the organization in other Southern California cities, where shelters have been built and buildings have been converted into low-income houses.

In Ventura County, the organization plans to raise money from its members to build or renovate year-round shelters and shelters for the “transitionally homeless,” people who are homeless from one to six months, association officials said.

The county’s only existing year-round shelter--the Zoe Christian Center in Oxnard--is threatened with closure.

City authorities determined that it is in an unsafe location next to a fertilizer plant that houses dangerous chemicals.
