COUNTYWIDE : Educators to Receive National Awards

Share

Principals and teachers from three Orange County schools will travel to Washington to receive national awards on Monday.

Helen Estock Elementary School and Arroyo Elementary School in the Tustin Unified School District and Dr. Jonas E. Salk Elementary School in Anaheim’s Magnolia School District were among 221 schools nationwide and 16 schools statewide to be honored as exemplary.

“This is a really big deal because we are the only district in the state with two schools to get awards,” said Tustin district spokesman Mark Eliot.

The U.S. Department of Education’s distinguished schools program honors schools for overall programs, school environment, attitude of staff members, how the school interacts with the community and parental involvement.

School leaders will receive plaques and flags Monday. The day will include a luncheon, speeches and a White House ceremony that is usually attended by the president.

“Obviously, we’re very excited,” said Dan Copple, principal of Salk Elementary School. Copple said he thinks that staff commitment and teamwork, excellent discipline, parental involvement and the school’s environmental program help set Salk apart from other schools.
