Fresno Invitational--Darcy Arreola of Cal State Northridge, the 1989 NCAA Division II cross-country champion, made a solid if not spectacular Division I debut.

Arreola, who timed 17 minutes 5 seconds over the 5,000-meter course in Woodward Park, finished second behind Buffy Rabbitt of UC Irvine (17:02.8).

Irvine won the team title with 75 points, followed by Weber State (95) and California (109). Northridge finished ninth with 197.

Derik Vett placed 32nd in the men’s race, leading Northridge to an 11th-place finish with 274 points. Fresno State won the team title on its home course with 60 points, followed by Irvine (76) and UCLA (81).

Laura Doering was Northridge’s second finisher, placing 31st in 18:43.5, a 40-second improvement over her showing at Fresno last year.

Rich Gitahi was the Matadors’ No. 2 man, finishing 71st in 27:17.7.

Cuesta Invitational--Tricia Mathieson of Moorpark ran the 3.1-mile course in 19:40 to win the women’s event. Shelby Serpa paced Valley, which won the women’s team title, with a 10th-place finish (20:22).

On the men’s four-mile course, Steve Lepkin placed fifth in 21:44 to help lead College of the Canyons to a third-place finish.

WATER POLO

Valley 11, Santa Monica 8--Nick Kaufman scored four goals and Robert Brown and Doug Yocum each added three for Valley (4-3) in the fifth-place match of the Mt. San Antonio College tournament.

Kaufman had a team-high 14 goals in four games for Valley (4-3) during the two-day tournament.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge def. Santa Clara, 15-13, 10-15, 15-4, 15-9--Kathleen Dixon had 12 kills and teammate Patty Fitzsimmons added 11 to lead host Northridge to a 15-13, 10-15, 15-4, 15-9 win over Santa Clara.

Master’s d. Christian Heritage College, 15-6, 15-4--The win earned The Master’s the consolation championship of the Cal State San Bernardino tournament.
