THE SIDELINES : $27 Million in Horse, Dog Tests

More than $27 million was spent in 1989 in testing greyhounds and horses for the illegal use of drugs, according to a racing organization.

A report released by the Assn. of Racing Commissioners International’s Drug Testing and Quality Assurance Program found that 48 racing jurisdictions spent $27.6 million to detect the illegal use of drugs.

New York, which races only horses, was the leader with $6.2 million in testing. California, which also has only horse races, was next with $2.3 million, and Illinois, another horse-racing state, followed at $2.2 million.

Laboratories reported 2,633 positive tests from 995,104 samples tested, the report said.
