El Cajon
An El Cajon man is being held in connection with the stabbing death of his mother, police said Monday.
Richard Gaitan, 29, held without bail, is expected to be transferred to the County Jail, a spokeswoman at the jail said.
Gaitan was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital after his arrest because he was suffering from self-inflicted stab wounds, El Cajon police said.
Gaitan was on probation for petty theft and had been recently released from jail, police said.
Shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday, police got a call from a man who said he had killed his mother Saturday night, said Lt. Robert Lein.
When police arrived, the man was waiting outside.
He directed them upstairs to the apartment he shared with his mother in the 700 block of North Mollison Avenue.
Police found the body of 67-year-old Virginia Guenther on the floor. She had multiple stab wounds to her face, chest, arms and back, Lein said.
