Mission Viejo : Council OKs $10,000 for Anti-Drug Rally

After drawing more than 1,000 people, on a rainy day, to march against drugs last year, city officials hope to attract twice that number at next month’s rally.
The City Council voted to spend $10,000 for the Walk Against Drugs, to be held on Oct. 27 in conjunction with the last day of National Red Ribbon Week, a national anti-drug rally.
Last year’s event was marked by then-Mayor William S. Craycraft’s introduction of an ordinance that would have prohibited those convicted of felony drug charges from participating in public housing programs in Mission Viejo.
That portion of Craycraft’s plan was defeated by the council. Surviving was his call for the creation of the city’s Drug and Substance Abuse Commission, which will run the drug rally next month.
Organizers hope to use the council appropriation to pay for giveaways such as T-shirts for the first 1,000 participants.
The commission proposes that the march begin at Mission Viejo High School and head east down La Paz Road to the Oso Viejo Community Center. Final plans have yet to be approved by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
