A transient charged in the stabbing death of a North Park man pleaded innocent Tuesday and was ordered held in County Jail without bail.

Michael Alan Bowles, 25, is accused of murder in the death of Ken Ruga, 43, who was stabbed repeatedly Friday.

Bowles is also accused of committing battery upon a police officer during his arrest. San Diego Police Officer Catherine Decker was taken to a hospital Friday after she suffered a gash over her left eye that required six stitches to close.

San Diego Municipal Judge Gale Kaneshiro ordered a preliminary hearing for Oct. 11.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Gordon Davis asked that bail not be set considering the violent nature of the crime and that the defendant was a transient. Public defender Art Herrera suggested that some bail be set, but did not specify an amount.
