Two Pacoima teen-agers were arrested in the shooting of a rival gang member who was gunned down last week as he left the parking lot of a Sun Valley school the day before classes began, Los Angeles police said.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday and a 17-year-old was taken into custody Wednesday, Detective Mark Aragon said. Both were being held at Sylmar Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder.

Manuel Yepiz, 15, of Sun Valley suffered a serious spinal injury when he was shot Sept. 10 as he left John H. Francis (Polytechnic) High School. His older brother and mother, who were with him at the time, were not injured.

The shots were fired from a van that sped away from the school.

Police said Manuel and his brother were members of an east San Fernando Valley gang. Information from witnesses and the injured youth led to the identification of the youths, who are members of a rival gang, Aragon said.

Manuel remains hospitalized and is undergoing rehabilitation treatment for the spinal injury, Aragon said.
