THOUSAND OAKS : City Considers Fines Over Loud Parties

Share

The Thousand Oaks City Council has given notice to people who hold loud parties to turn down the volume.

The council agreed Tuesday night to move forward with an ordinance that will allow the city to charge residents for the cost of dispatching sheriff’s deputies to quiet revelers.

Sheriff’s Cmdr. Bill Wade said Wednesday that the law will help officers who have to respond to angry neighbors complaining about noisy parties. The department receives about 800 calls each year concerning loud parties in Thousand Oaks, Wade said.

The law allows officers to issue a warning to residents causing the disturbance.

If the noise continues, revelers would be billed for the cost of having a peace officer, according to the ordinance. Although the amount will vary depending on the disturbance, the highest penalty is $1,000.

Council members said it will also help city officials crack down on people who create a din with their lawn mowers, power saws and hammers while doing home-improvement projects.

The same ordinance restricts the times that homeowners can use power tools and equipment to daytime hours.

The council is expected to approve the ordinance at its meeting Tuesday.
