Going into the third week of the season, linebacker Troy Seurer of Edison was getting noticed for more than the style of play that earned him a spot on The Times’ All-County team as a junior. He was noticed for his snazzy white high-top shoes.

For the record:

Edison coach--Troy Seurer’s coaching position was incorrectly identified in Thursday’s paper. Seurer is an assistant football coach at Edison High School.

High tops on the football field are common today. But in 1980, Seurer looked more like a basketball player who had made a wrong turn in the locker room.

Seurer, now an assistant coach with the San Diego Chargers, was wearing the high-top shoes to protect his ankles.

“Troy has tiny ankles and had some problems with injuries last season, so he’s wearing high tops this season,” Edison Coach Bill Workman said at the time.

In third-week games, Marina continued the turnaround of its program with a 13-3 victory over El Modena. The victory gave Marina a 3-0 record, one season after the Vikings qualified for the Southern Section playoffs for the first time in the school’s history.

Coach Dave Thompson started the resurgence. From 1963-1978, Marina’s record was 43-95-6. Thompson coached the Vikings to a 4-5 record his first season, then led Marina to the playoffs with a 9-2-1 record in 1979.

Former Kansas City Royals’ relief pitcher Dan Quisenberry read The Times’ Sea View League football preview while the Royals were in town to play the Angels.

“It looks like my old high school (Costa Mesa) is about as good in football as when I was there,” Quisenberry said. When asked how he thought Costa Mesa might fare in 1985, he said, “I don’t know, but I think a winning record is too much to ask.”

The Mustangs finished 3-7, but they stopped a 14-game losing streak when they won their opener.

From the “Why Couldn’t the Team Wear Brown?” Dept.: Villa Park upset the county’s consensus No. 1 team: Los Alamitos.

Los Alamitos was expected to power to the Southern Section title behind the running of Erik Mitchell. Local prep sports columnist Randy Franz said Los Alamitos was so good that he promised to dye his hair the color of any school that beat Los Alamitos.

To Franz’s misfortune, Villa Park wears blue. Villa Park had a special pep rally to dye his hair blue.
