A search team scouring the Angeles National Forest Thursday discovered the charred wreckage of a private plane that had been missing since Wednesday. The body of the pilot was reported found in the wreckage.

The cream-colored Piper 28 was found at Deer Springs Branch in Eaton Canyon, near Mt. Wilson, by 70-year-old retired Air Force Lt. Col. Keith Kelly, who is a member of a Civil Air Patrol search-and-rescue team. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies confirmed one body was found in the wreckage, believed to be that of the pilot, 64-year-old Floyd McCollough.

McCollough, of El Centro, took off from Burbank Airport Wednesday afternoon headed for the Imperial Airport but never arrived, Civil Air Patrol spokesman Lt. Col. Bob Fowler said.
