ROUNDUP : Walsh Leads Carson Past Lynwood, 37-14

John Walsh tied a school record by passing for four touchdowns and leading Carson High to a 37-14 victory over Lynwood Friday night in an intersectional game at Lynwood.

The Colts’ victory was the 300th for Coach Gene Vollnogle, who will retire after the season. The winningest coach in California history, Vollnogle has won 279 games at the varsity level.

Carson improved to 2-0 and Lynwood dropped to 1-2.

Walsh struggled in the first half, completing four of 10 with two interceptions. But on the first drive of the second half, he passed to running back Abdul Muhammad on a 55-yard touchdown scoring play to give Carson a 17-0 lead. It was the first of Muhammad’s three touchdowns.

Walsh finished with 12 completions in 22 attempts for 337 yards. Among Carson’s defensive standouts were back Tarriel Hopper (two fumble recoveries) and lineman Art Malupe (two sacks).

Carson, the top-rated team in the City, took a 24-0 lead late in the third quarter when Muhammad caught a 14-yard touchdown pass. Colt running back Darryl Gideon had a 47-yard run to set up Muhammad’s second touchdown.
