COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chapman Gains Its First Soccer Victory of the Season

Mike Voss and Cody Starrett scored to give the Chapman men’s soccer team a 2-0 victory over La Verne in a nonconference men’s soccer match at Chapman Friday. It was Chapman’s first victory of the season.

Voss scored a goal 15 minutes into the first half and Starrett followed with a score 18 minutes later to pace Chapman (1-3-1).

Goalie John Kinley had four saves for his first shutout of the season.

In other nonconference men’s soccer:

UC Irvine 5, Loyola Marymount 1--Kevin Smith scored two goals to pace UC Irvine (3-5-1) in a match at Loyola. Erik Nasarenko, John O’Brien and Anthony Russomanno also scored for Irvine, which led, 3-0, at halftime. Loyola’s score was by Eric Hill. Irvine goalie Mike Gartlan had six saves. Mike Luken had nine saves for Loyola (2-3).

Cal State Northridge 2, Southern California College 1--Danny Daniels scored once in each half to give host Cal State Northridge (3-4-1) a 2-0 lead. Southern California College’s Bijan Chavoshan scored to cut the lead to one.

In Big West men’s soccer:

Nevada Las Vegas 2, Cal State Fullerton 1--In the conference opener Friday, visiting Cal State Fullerton (1-3-2, 0-1) took a 1-0 lead on forward Raul Haro’s first-half goal. UNLV (4-1-2, 1-0) tied the score early in the second half on a goal by Doug Borgel, and won it with a goal late in the second half. Goalies Jay Nettekoven of Cal State Fullerton and Doug Schell of UNLV each had five saves.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Santa Barbara d. UC Irvine, 15-5, 15-9, 15-8--Kristie Ryan had seven kills and 13 digs to lead UC Santa Barbara (12-1, 1-0) in the conference-opening match for both schools at Irvine. For Irvine (4-6, 0-1), Kim Collins had 10 kills and 14 digs.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Cal Baptist d. Southern California College, 15-11, 15-6, 8-15, 15-12--Leslie Lastrapes had 13 kills and 10 blocks for host SCC. Kathy Westfall also had 16 assists for SCC (12-10).

In Golden State Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball:

Point Loma 3, Christ College Irvine 2--Miriam Paulus of Christ College Irvine had 17 kills but Christ College Irvine lost to Point Loma, 15-13, 7-15, 14-16, 15-8, 15-9.
