Two people were killed and eight others suffered injuries in two traffic mishaps in Fountain Valley and San Clemente.

Two children were among the seven injured in the Fountain Valley incident, in which a 26-year-old Santa Ana man was killed. The accident occurred at 1:36 a.m. Saturday when a Ford sedan collided with a Chevrolet pickup carrying the children and four adults.

Fountain Valley police arrested the driver of the Ford, Charles Fishel, 18, of El Cajon, on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence in connection with the death of Gaspar Garcia Morales, a passenger in the truck. Police would not say whether it was drugs or alcohol that Fishel is suspected of using.

The collision occurred at Ellis and Magnolia streets when police said Fishel, who was traveling east on Ellis, failed to stop for a red light. Police said the car then struck the pickup, injuring the truck passengers, the driver and one Fountain Valley man riding in the Fishel vehicle.

In addition to Morales, who died from head injuries and multiple fractures, the truck passengers were identified as Jose Cano, 21, Roberto Galan, 20, Victor Garcia, 10, Fanya Servin, 12, all of Santa Ana. The driver, not identified by police, was airlifted from the scene to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he was listed in critical condition.

Police did not know which or how many passengers were riding in the back of the pickup.

The only truck passenger listed in local hospitals early Saturday was Servin. She was released from Western Medical Center-Santa Ana on Saturday afternoon.

Toby Wood, 18, a passenger in Fishel’s vehicle, was in serious condition also at UCI Medical Center on Saturday. Police said Fishel was treated for minor injuries.

In San Clemente, California Highway Patrol officials said a 23-year-old woman was killed and a 20-year-old man injured when their vehicle ran off Interstate 5, south of Avenida Pico, and became airborne before landing in a football field.

Officials said the driver was identified as Michelle Kelly and the passenger as Ronald Lord, both of Dana Point.

Lord was in serious condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Authorities said the two were traveling north on the freeway about 10 p.m. Friday when the vehicle swerved right and went over an embankment. Officials said the car then traveled about 60 feet in the air and hit a tree, before rolling to a stop on a football field.

Officials said toxicology tests will be performed to determine whether alcohol played any role in the accident.
