UCSD Women Coast to Championship of Volleyball Tournament

UC San Diego’s women’s volleyball team captured the championship of the Claremont/Pomona-Pitzer Invitational with a 15-8, 15-7 victory over La Verne in the final Saturday.

UCSD (18-3) defeated Menlo, 15-6, 15-3 in the semifinals, and placed three players on the all-tournament team: Vikki Van Duyne, Amy Banachowski and Heather Holtzclaw. Van Duyne and Holtzclaw had 12 kills each between the two matches.

Jamie Wheat’s six aces and 13 kills lifted Point Loma Nazarene to a 9-15, 15-9, 15-9, 15-4 victory over Southern California College, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match at PLNC.

Debbie Simpson also had 13 kills and LeAnne Lopez added 42 assists for the Crusaders (11-4, 2-0). SCC dropped to 12-11, 0-2.

MEN’S SOCCER

Christian Heritage defeated Pacific Christian for its first victory, 2-0, behind goals by Paul Ermie and Kenny Littlefield. Christian Heritage is 1-4; Pacific Christian fell to 2-3.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UCSD defeated Redlands, 8-0, behind Joanne deLuz’s three goals at UCSD.

Katie Ashley had one goal and two assists, while Jackie Melnik, Karin Lindsay, Katie Larkin and Amy Wayte also scored for UCSD (5-1), which had 26 shots on goal.

The Tritons, currently No. 2 and defending national champions in Division III, will face 1989 Division II runner-up Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m. Monday at home.

Nicky Roche scored the game’s lone goal on a late penalty kick, as U.S. International defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0. USIU improved to 3-2-1.

San Diego State dropped to 2-3 with a 1-0 loss to UC Irvine at Irvine. Michelle Braceros scored at 60:53 for Irvine (2-5-1).
