Birch Society Ad

Share

This letter is to address the advertisement of the John Birch Society on Nelson Mandela (Aug.13).

The ad contained propaganda about Mandela which was very negative and intimidating. Viewing the conditions of freedom of speech and advertising, I still can’t help but think of how this organization stands alone because it oppresses the true American Dream.

What is the American Dream? Well, in my opinion, the American Dream is a dream in which no man can decide right from wrong or wrong from right, but respect and love one another for whatthey are. This means white, black, brown, purple, orange, blue, green can stand as people.

This is what I teach my son, Chris. You see, Mandela is a model not only for South Africa but for young people across the world, especially our black youth. With all of the gang violence and killings of other sorts taking place, we as a nation cannot afford to allow others to continue to destroy what morals we have remaining.

We must enhance those things for the people. As a single, divorced, black mother, I will not accept the fact of inferiority because I believe there is none. I will accept the truth of equality and justice, of freedom for the people, by the people and for equal rights of women, children and for the right of man to be free from oppression. This is what constitutes my opinion of Mandela. YVONNE HARVEY Panorama City
