Over the next year, United Way of Greater Los Angeles plans to distribute more than $62 million to social service and health agencies, United Way officials said Tuesday.

The sum is about the same as the amount distributed last year to organizations in Los Angeles County and parts of San Bernardino and Kern counties, said Eleanor Hawkins, vice president of allocations for the agency.

About $42 million of this year’s allocation will go to 318 agencies working in such areas as youth services, family counseling, health and therapy. Another $18 million will be donated to local chapters of the American Red Cross and such organizations as the American Cancer Society and the Crippled Children’s Society. And $2 million will be distributed as venture grants to support programs dealing with AIDS education, adult illiteracy and drug abuse.
