THE SIDELINES : Sturm to Coach U.S. Volleyball

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. —
Fred Sturm of Stanford University was named the head coach of the U.S. men’s volleyball team today.
Sturm has coached the Cardinals since 1978 and has guided it to at least 20 victories in each of the last six years. He was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1989.
Sturm, 37, has coached a number of current Team USA players, including captain Scott Fortune, Jon Root and Chris Braun. A former standout at UCLA, Sturm will join the San Diego-based U.S. team Jan. 1.
