COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Humbert’s Six Goals Leads Cal Over UC Irvine

Chris Humbert scored six goals as top-ranked California held off UC Irvine, 15-12, in a nonconference water polo game Friday at Cal.

Cal (10-0) trailed, 7-5, in the second quarter but rallied to tie the score, 8-8, at halftime.

Steve Gill, who scored three goals, gave the Anteaters a 10-9 lead with 3 minutes 10 seconds left in the third quarter. However, former Corona del Mar High School star Chris Oeding scored with 1:13 left in the quarter to give the Golden Bears a 11-10 lead and they never trailed again.

Oeding, the Times Orange County player of the year in 1988, scored three goals. Pablo Yrizar scored four goals and Jay Warren three for the eighth-ranked Anteaters (6-4).

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Cal State San Bernardino 5, Chapman College 0--Freshman Jackie Powers scored three goals for the third time this season and fellow freshman Merinda Tenace scored twice to lead host San Bernardino (7-4) over Chapman (4-4).

In the first round of the Division II men’s tennis tournament at Cal Poly Pomona:

Michael Zurcher of Chapman, the No. 2-seeded player, defeated Eric Glade of Cal Poly Pomona, 6-2, 6-4; No. 8 Laurent Dropsy of Chapman defeated Scott Munce of UC Riverside, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Art Hsieh of UC Riverside defeated Bruce Wolfram of Chapman, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
