Roy Jones Heads Oct. 9 Boxing Card

Roy Jones Jr., Olympic silver medalist in 1988, will put his 10-0 professional record on the line Oct. 9 at the San Diego Sports Arena against Robert Rosales (20-10) of Los Angeles in the main event of an eight-fight card.

Jones, who lost a controversial decision to Park si Hun of South Korea for the Seoul Olympic Games gold medal, is fighting as a middleweight (160 pounds). Also on the card, which is being promoted by Scott Woodworth of Arena Boxing Enterprises Inc. and begins at 7:30 p.m., will be Kid Akeem (20-0, 15 knockouts), the North American Boxing Federation’s flyweight champion. Jones and Kid Akeem will be working out Saturday and Sunday afternoons at the Omni Hotel.

SAILING

Three syndicates met a Monday deadline of providing proof of having raised $6 million and were confirmed by the San Diego Yacht Club as defense teams for America’s Cup ’92. They syndicates are: Team Dennis Conner, Beach Boys USA and Triumph America.

The $6 million is roughly one-quarter of the projected $20-$25 million budgets under which each team will operate.

The three defender yachts will race in selection trials beginning in January, 1992. The winner will then defend the Cup in May of that year.

MOTOR SPORTS

Nolan White and son Rick set an unofficial International Automobile Assn. BSS class record of 387.221 m.p.h. on the final day of the World Speed competition on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, but missed out on the unlimited record of 409.277 m.p.h.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Karin Lindsay scored the game’s lone goal at the 25-minute mark on an assist from Kalyn Shea to give UC San Diego (7-1-1) a 1-0 victory over host Chapman College.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Jane Fitzgerald defeated Mildred Stanley of Escondido in the first round of match play in the 1990 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, played at the 5,982-yard, par-72 Allegheny Country Club at Sewickley, Pa. Fitzgerald won, 4 and 3.
