Pat Day Hit With 5-Day Suspension

CHICAGO — Jockey Pat Day was suspended from riding at Arlington International Racecourse for five days starting today for crossing over several horses, Arlington stewards said.
Day was penalized for his ride on Palinode in the second race Sept. 29. He was trying to take the lead down the back stretch from the outside of a seven-horse field. His move to the inside caused a three-horse jam.
Palinode went on to win the race but was disqualified after an objection by jockey Abner Sorrows. His mount, Marfavor, was placed first.
The suspension, handed down Monday, ended Day’s hopes of breaking Randy Romero’s meet record of 182 wins set in 1982. But Day’s current total of 167 wins assures him of his fourth Arlington riding title.
The suspension is Day’s second of the meeting. He was previously suspended July 30-Aug. 3.
