Harold E. Cook; Retired Court Reporter

Harold E. Cook, a retired court reporter who was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed, has died in Granada Hills. He was 70.

A resident of Granada Hills, Cook died Sept. 27 of heart failure, said his wife, Helen M. Cook.

Born June 6, 1920, in Blackduck, Minn., Cook served in the U.S. Navy from 1939 to 1946, achieving the rank of chief yeoman. Cook, stationed on the battleship Maryland at Pearl Harbor, was uninjured in the Dec. 7, 1941, attack. After he was discharged, he came to California and settled in the San Fernando Valley in 1957. He worked as a court reporter for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in downtown Los Angeles, Van Nuys and Lancaster until his retirement in 1981. Cook enjoyed golf and was a member of the American Legion post in Panorama City.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years; son James G. Cook of Santa Monica; daughter Cindy S. Cook of Santa Monica; brothers Paul Cook of Lake Isabella, Calif., and Milton Cook of Brandon, Wis.; sisters Dorothy Larner and Frances DelSelva of Santa Rosa, and Louise Houston of Arlington Heights, Ill.; and one grandson.

A private service is scheduled Friday. Utter McKinley Mortuary in Mission Hills is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Cook’s name to the American Cancer Society or the National Leukemia Assn.
