American Michael Chang was a surprisingly easy upset victim at the Australian Indoor Championships today, losing to Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 6-2, 6-4.

Chang, seeded sixth, gave credit to Lundgren’s play on the synthetic surface.

“I was on the defense most of the match,” Chang said. “He didn’t miss much all day.”

Lundgren is 73rd in the world rankings.

Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl, the top three seeds, had to battle to get into the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Edberg of Sweden managed a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Australian Mark Kratzmann. Germany’s Becker, the second seed, overcame a slow start to beat Kelly Evernden of New Zealand 6-4, 6-3. And Lendl, of the United States, overcame American Scott Davis, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2.

Becker had no complaints about spectator behavior after his latest match. He had called for a ban on alcohol in the box seats Wednesday night, saying that drunks at court side were a distraction during his match with Mats Wilander.

Asked how the spectators were at today’s session, Becker replied: “Less drunk.”

Edberg on Friday will play American David Wheaton, a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 winner over German Patrick Kuhnen.

Becker has a quarterfinal match against eighth-seeded Richey Reneberg of the United States, who beat Australian Wally Masur, 7-5, 6-3 today.

Canadian Grant Connell and Australian Todd Woodbridge make up the other quarterfinal pairing. Woodbridge advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over American Brad Pearce, and Connell, who earlier in the tournament defeated fifth-seeded Aaron Krickstein, ousted Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Marian Vadja of Czechoslovakia upset top seed Thomas Muster, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 today to advance to the quarterfinals of the Athens International Championship.
