The FBI is searching for a man dubbed the Beachcomber Bandit because of his penchant for robbing coastal area banks.
Agent Jack Kelly said the FBI has excellent pictures of the man taken by security cameras on Thursday at the Great Western Bank branch in Del Mar and at two other banks in Solana Beach.
San Diego police said the man entered Great Western Bank, 2747 Via de la Valle, at about 9 a.m. while the bank had one customer.
The man, displaying a small caliber pistol, told the teller to “give me all of your money and none of that dye stuff,” referring to money which has been prepackaged with an exploding red dye. The man escaped with about $2,200.
The man is described as a white male about 32 years old, 5-foot-11 to 6 feet tall and 170 pounds.
He is of slender build with short, wavy blond hair and wire-rimmed glasses, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.
Kelly said the man is suspected in two other robberies based on the pictures and his oral demand for money: the American Savings Bank branch, 923 Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach was robbed at 2:45 p.m. on Sept. 21; the Bank of America branch, 405 S. Highway 101, was robbed at 11:15 a.m. on Sept. 11 of an undisclosed sum.
