TENNIS ROUNDUP : Chang Loses to Lundgren in Australia
Michael Chang was a surprisingly easy upset victim at the Australian Indoor championships Thursday, losing to Peter Lundgren of Sweden, 6-2, 6-4, at Sydney.
Chang, seeded sixth, gave credit to Lundgren’s play on the Rebound Ace synthetic surface.
“I was on the defense most of the match,” Chang said. “He didn’t miss much all day.”
Lundgren, ranked 73rd in the world, had an easier match than did Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl, the top three seeded players who all had to battle to get into the quarterfinals.
Edberg managed a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Mark Kratzmann of Australia; Becker beat New Zealander Kelly Evernden, 6-4, 6-3, and Lendl overcame Scott Davis, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2.
Edberg today plays David Wheaton, a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 winner over German Patrick Kuhnen, and Becker faces eighth-seeded Richey Reneberg, who beat Australian Wally Masur, 7-5, 6-3.
Marian Vadja of Czechoslovakia upset top-seeded Thomas Muster, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Athens International Championship in Greece.
Martina Navratilova breezed past Anke Huber of Germany, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals of the Nokia Masters at Essen, Germany.
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain beat Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
