Suwara Coaches 400th Victory for Aztec Women

Rudy Suwara coached his 400th women’s volleyball match victory at San Diego State Thursday as the Aztecs defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 15-8, 15-10, 15-6.

His first women’s victory at SDSU was Oct. 8, 1976, and 10 years ago Thursday, he won his 100th match. His women’s record at SDSU is 400-185-3.

Including four years of coaching men at UC Santa Barbara and five years with the SDSU men’s team, he has a record of 564-284-7.

“I’ve been lucky to be at a real good school with a lot of support,” Suwara said earlier this week. “And I’ve been lucky enough to have a lot of wonderful players over the years.”

Freshman Stephanie Riley (Patrick Henry) had six kills with a .625 hitting percentage. Shannon Mathew had seven kills.

SDSU is 11-6, Cal Poly SLO 7-12.

MEN’S TENNIS

Top-seeded Hans Hoegstedt of Point Loma Nazarene College lost to Azusa Pacific’s Greg Johnson, 7-5, 7-5, in the final of the Rolex NAIA Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

Hoegstedt reached the final by defeating PLNC teammate John Norton, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals.
