A Carlsbad man was killed Thursday when he was struck by an Amtrak train as he walked along a trestle in North San Diego County near San Onofre, according to authorities

Adam James Ruley, 23, was struck at about 1 p.m. on a trestle one mile north of where Basilone Road ends near Interstate 5, according to Deputy Coroner Everett Mauger. The trestle is part of the train’s right of way on its coastal route to San Diego.

Ruley, who worked in Carlsbad as a grocery store clerk, was pushing his bike and walking with two friends on the trestle. His companions, who did not have bikes, were able to safely move out of the way of the train, but Ruley was not, Mauger said.
