NHL ROUNDUP : Trottier Leads Penguins in 7-4 Comeback Victory

The Pittsburgh Penguins displayed their ability to strike quickly Sunday night against the New Jersey Devils.

Bryan Trottier had two goals and Jaromir Jagr and John Cullen also scored in a 2:27 span of the third period as the Penguins came from behind to defeat the Devils, 7-4, at Pittsburgh.

Trottier made the score 4-4 at 13:08 with a goal from behind the net that went in off defenseman Bruce Driver and eluded goalie Chris Terreri.

Jagr, the Penguins’ top pick in last summer’s draft, got his first NHL goal at 14:10 when he put in a rebound from close range. Cullen converted Mark Recchi’s back-hand pass at 14:23 and Trottier finished the scoring burst at 15:35 when he knocked in Joey Mullen’s pass from behind the net.

Philadelphia 7, Detroit 2--Norm Lacombe, Tony Horacek and Craig Berube scored in a three-minute span in the second period at Philadelphia.

Lacombe tied the game, 2-2, when he deflected Martin Hostak’s shot past goaltender Tim Cheveldae at 1:28 of the second period. Horacek put Philadelphia ahead 27 seconds later when he scored from the slot on a rebound.

Berube made the score 4-2 when he flipped a shot past Cheveldae’s glove side.

The Red Wings have surrendered 16 goals in three games.

New York Islanders 4, Chicago 2--Pat LaFontaine had a goal and two assists and rookie goalie Jeff Hackett stopped 44 shots at Chicago to lead the Islanders.

Doug Crossman, LaFontaine and David Volek scored on power plays and Hubie McDonough got a short-handed goal.

Edmonton 3, Toronto 2--Joe Murphy scored two power-play goals for the defending Stanley Cup-champion Oilers at Edmonton, keeping the Maple Leafs winless in three games.

Boston 5, Quebec 2--Defenseman Glen Wesley scored one goal and set up two others--including the go-ahead goal by Randy Burridge in the third period--as the Bruins spoiled the Nordiques’ home opener.
