The NFL players’ union Monday suggested all members of the news media, male and female, be barred from locker rooms and separate interview areas be set up to assure privacy for the players.

“NFL players should be afforded absolute privacy in their locker rooms,” Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players Assn., said in a statement from his union’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. “They should not be expected or required to participate in media interviews unless fully clothed.”

His statement follows recent incidents involving female sports writers covering NFL teams in Foxboro, Mass., and Seattle.

Indianapolis Colt owner Bob Irsay said he would meet with Eric Dickerson “probably Tuesday or Wednesday.”

“If he’s a nice man and if he’s got his head screwed on right, I will talk to him. But if he gets up and talks about my offensive line or my players, I will leave the room,” Irsay said. After a protracted disagreement with the Colts, Dickerson came to training camp late, failed his physical and was placed on the non-football injury list.

San Francisco 49er running back Roger Craig suffered a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament of the right knee in the second quarter of Sunday’s 24-21 victory over the Houston Oilers. There were no immediate plans for surgery. . . . Chicago Bear quarterback Jim Harbaugh has a cracked rib, but there was no decision on whether he would be available to play against the Rams Sunday.

Brent Fullwood, Green Bay’s No. 1 draft pick in 1987 and a Pro Bowl running back last season, will be released or traded today, Packer Coach Lindy Infante said. Fullwood sat out the second half of Sunday’s 27-13 loss to the Chicago Bears because he had an upset stomach and a sore throat, an illness Infante did not know about until Sunday.
