How About Creating City Councils A, B?

Share

At the Oct. 1 council meeting, the city of Monterey Park created two Design Review Boards, to be designated Boards “A” and “B.” Board A is to review commercial building and B to review residential building.

The city did not go far enough. It should create a third board perhaps designated “none of the above” to review construction that does not fall into either category such as the controversial parking structure at the Garfield Medical Center.

In an article published in the Los Angeles Times (Sept. 13), Mayor Judy Chu is quoted as saying the parking structure is legal because it is a parking structure, not a commercial building, and is exempt from the three-story rule. This is where the third Design Review Board would come in, on buildings which are neither residential or commercial.

To take the concept further, I would favor creating another City Council, also designated A and B. Council A would consist of the present council, which would take care of matters such as presenting awards, taking trips, making public appearances, allowing the keeping of Vietnamese potbellied pigs in our city.

Council B would concern itself with the more serious business of our city.
