TENNIS ROUNDUP : Top Seeds Move to Quarterfinals in Tokyo Event

Top seeds Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl advanced to the quarterfinals today in the Seiko Super tennis tournament.

Top-seeded Edberg beat Darren Cahill 6-4, 6-2.

Becker, seeded second, defeated Todd Witsken 6-2, 6-3.

Lendl, seeded third, beat Wally Masur 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

“It will be very difficult for me to win the tournament because the surface does not favor me at all,” Lendl said of the fast artificial surface of the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. “But if I play very well, I have a good chance.”

Lendl won seven of his 14 service games without losing a point.

In other third-round matches, 10th-seeded Andrei Cherkasov defeated 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 and Scott Davis beat David Wheaton 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

Second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini defeated Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of Germany 6-4, 7-5 today to reach the quarter-finals of the European Indoors tournament at Zurich, Switzerland.

Sabatini, winner of the U.S. Open last month, next will meet fifth-seeded Helena Sukova, who eliminated Switzerland’s Emanuela Zardo 6-4, 7-5.

No. 3 seed Manuela Maleeva of Switzerland ousted Claudia Porwik of Germany 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, and seventh-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France advanced to the quarters with a 6-4, 6-2 win over compatriot Nathalie Guerree.

Unseeded American Jeff Tarengo upset fourth- seeded Mark Koevermans 7-6, 6-1 today in the quarterfinals of the Riklis Classic at Ramat Hasharon, Israel..

The victory sent the left-handed former Stanford player into the semifinals against second seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel. Mansdorf disposed of Nigeria’s serve-and-volleyer Nduka Odizor, 7-5, 6-1.

Gilad Bloom of Israel, seeded fifth, saved three match points and defeated third-seeded Christo van Rensburg 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 in a three-hour quarterfinal match.

Bloom next will face top-seed Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union who overpowered hard-hitting Swede Lars Jonsson to win 6-3, 6-1.
