A fire, blamed by firefighters on an auto engine, heavily damaged the residence of Assemblywoman Marian W. La Follette (R-Northridge) in Porter Ranch on Friday afternoon.

The fire began about noon at La Follette’s house in the 11800 block of Doral Avenue.

The assemblywoman’s husband, John T. La Follette, had started the family car in the garage, then left the engine running while he ran back into the house to get something, said Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Pat Marek.

“When he came back out the car was burning under the front,” Marek said.

The fire quickly spread through the garage and the attic.

Damage was estimated at $200,000; about $100,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents.

The engine of the automobile, a late- model Cadillac Seville, had been recently worked on, Marek said.

John La Follette was taken to Tarzana Medical Center to be examined for smoke exposure.
