COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UCI Water Polo Gives Newland His 499th Coaching Victory

Pablo Yrizar had four goals to lead the UC Irvine water polo team to a 13-4 victory over UC San Diego in a nonconference water polo game Friday at Heritage Park.

Irvine Coach Ted Newland is one victory shy of the 500th of his college coaching career. His record is 499-175-5.

Irvine (9-8), the eighth-ranked team in the nation, built a 7-0 halftime lead and had an 8-0 lead before San Diego scored with 1 minute 57 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Irvine’s Jay Warren added two goals. Yrizar has 52 goals this season.

In Big West conference men’s soccer:

Nevada Las Vegas 2, UC Irvine 0--UC Irvine (4-10-1, 0-1 in conference) lost its Big West Conference opener Friday in Las Vegas. The Rebels (6-5-2, 3-2) got goals from Terry Pryer and Doug Borgel.

Cal State Fullerton 2, UC Santa Barbara 1--T.C. Valentine and Bryan Lou scored for host Cal State Fullerton (5-5-3, 3-2) Friday. Santa Barbara (7-4, 3-1) scored on Kendal Fargo’s goal.

In the Cal State Fullerton women’s volleyball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 3, U.S. International 0--Freshman Becky Howlett had 20 kills as host Cal State Fullerton (4-18) stopped a 14-match losing streak with a 15-13, 15-8, 15-11 victory in the round-robin tournament. In another tournament game, William & Mary defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 16-14, 15-11, 15-2.
