Ron Price, Fairfax High football coach, said that he planned to file a complaint with the City athletic office after his team was penalized 14 times for 135 yards Friday in a 6-0 victory over Westchester.

“The referees didn’t let the kids play this game,” Price said. “They did everything in their power to take the game away from the teams. We had this crew two weeks ago against Narbonne and it was the same thing. I want to make sure we never get them again. I hope our principal makes the same complaint.”

Price said he would file a complaint Monday.

Fairfax, which improved to 2-0 in the Coastal Conference and 4-0 overall, stopped visiting Westchester eight times inside the Fairfax 10-yard line in the final two minutes. The Comets, penalized six times for 70 yards, dropped to 1-1 and 3-2.

Westchester took possession at the Fairfax 30-yard line with 2:22 remaining and moved to the 10 one play later. After gaining only three yards in the next three downs, quarterback Brad Freeman lofted a fourth-down pass to tight end Albert Jones in the corner of the end zone. The pass appeared to be out of reach of Jones, but pass interference was called against Fairfax cornerback Mario Mattison. The penalty gave Westchester a first down on the four with a minute to play.

On third and goal from the one, Westchester running back Walter Grissam was dropped for a six-yard loss. Darrell Rubin dropped a pass in the end zone on fourth down with 18 seconds left.

Penalties marred two Fairfax drives in the fourth quarter. The Lions’ first drive of the quarter began at their 45. After two penalties thwarted first-down runs by Mattison, Fairfax punted on fourth and 23 from its 32-yard line.

On Fairfax’s next possession, a holding penalty erased a first-down pass play to Charles Gillum and the Lions had to punt on fourth and 30 from their nine.

Fairfax scored in the second quarter on quarterback Rahim Muhammad’s 57-yard touchdown pass play to Tharen Todd. A two-point conversion was called back because of a penalty and the team then failed to convert the extra point.

“I never thought that my touchdown would stand,” Todd said. “But the referees controlled this game so much that it did. I’m happy we won, but I’m frustrated over the penalties.”

Muhammad broke loose for a 53-yard run late in the second quarter that put Fairfax on the Westchester 10-yard line, but a holding penalty was called against Lions. The team punted three downs later.

Fairfax finished with 152 total yards. Westchester had 140.

Muhammad completed five of 11 passes for 93 yards and two interceptions. Mattison led all rushers with 38 yards in 18 carries.
