A man was killed and his passenger suffered minor injuries Monday when their car plunged off the ramp leading from eastbound Interstate 8 to southbound Interstate 5 and landed upside down on I-5, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver was dead at the scene, the CHP said. The identities of the two, both Navy men, were not released pending notification of relatives, the county coroner’s office said.

The single-car accident occurred about 1 a.m. when the driver took the southbound ramp at 100 m.p.h, the CHP said. The car broke through the guard rail and landed on its roof in the far right lane of southbound I-5, the CHP said.
