Golden Pheasant, winner of three of five starts this year on turf, will miss the Breeders’ Cup with a broken canon bone in his right foreleg.

The Charlie Whittingham-trained 4-year-old colt sustained the injury Monday in training at Santa Anita Park.

Golden Pheasant would have been one of the favorites, coupled with Arc de Triomphe winner Saumarez, in the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Turf on Oct. 27 at Belmont Park. Both are owned by Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall and Kings center Wayne Gretzky.

In his last outing, Golden Pheasant won the Arlington Million on Sept. 2. He also counts the John Henry last May at Hollywood Park among his victories. He was raced in Europe as a 3-year-old.

Golden Pheasant was ranked fourth in the latest National Thoroughbred Poll.
