Aaron Krickstein, seeded No. 1, beat former champion YaYa Doumbia of Senegal, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, in the opening round of the Lyon Grand Prix tennis tournament in France. Doumbia beat Todd Nelson to win the 1988 tournament as a qualifier when ranked No. 453 in the world.
Mats Wilander of Sweden, the former No. 1 player in the world, eliminated No. 5 Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Cherkasov, ranked 28th, evened the match, 3-3, in the final set, but Wilander, whose ranking had dropped to No. 70, won the final three games.
