Two men changing a tire on a pickup truck along the Harbor Freeway were shot and wounded Tuesday night by suspected gang members who pulled alongside and, after first offering to help, asked if the victims belonged to a Carson street gang, police said.

The two motorists answered, “No, we’re from San Pedro,” and a passenger in the car opened fire, Los Angeles police said.

The suspects, two men and a woman, fled southbound from the shooting scene, about a quarter-mile north of Channel Street in San Pedro.

Monet Williams, 24, and his cousin, Gerald Well, also 24, were taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where both were in serious condition. Well was struck in the head and armpit, and Williams was hit in the shoulder.

The shooting was the third on Los Angeles freeways since last Friday.
