6 Dolphins Still Watch Over Sick Mammal

The ailing dolphin that is being aided by six other dolphins in Santa Monica Bay remained in “very guarded condition” Thursday, according to marine conservationists who tracked the mammals by boat off the coast of Malibu.

The dolphin, nicknamed “Bonnie,” has been floundering inside the surf line for nearly two weeks, suffering from an unknown ailment. Six older dolphins have surrounded the sick mammal to keep her from beaching herself.

Peter Wallerstein, director of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, said the dolphins were keeping the ailing mammal afloat. Marine rescuers have said there is no need for human intervention as long as Bonnie was being watched by the other adult dolphins.
