A 65-year-old woman died Wednesday from internal injuries suffered in a car accident near the UC Irvine campus.

The victim was identified as Miriam Rothstein of Irvine. She was injured at about 6 p.m. Wednesday as she rode in the back seat of a Nissan Maxima that was struck broadside when the driver attempted a left turn from westbound Campus Drive to southbound Culver Drive, said Irvine Police Officer Greg McFarland. The Nissan driver, Eva Piotrovsky, 45, of Irvine was treated for minor injuries at UCI Medical Center.

The driver of a Honda Accord that struck Piotrovsky’s vehicle was identified as Christina Wallace, 25, of Laguna Niguel. Police said Wallace was heading east on Campus Drive and entered the intersection on a yellow light. Both drivers were wearing seat belts and were not charged, McFarland said.

Rothstein, who police said was not wearing a seat belt because she was lying on the back seat of the Nissan, was transported by helicopter to UCI Medical Center and died from her injuries at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, McFarland said.

Wallace was treated for minor injuries at UCI Medical Center.
