THE SIDELINES : Murray Beats Ward for Title
Charles Murray scored a unanimous and lopsided 12-round decision over Irish Micky Ward to become the United States Boxing Assn. junior welterweight champion.
The 22-year-old unbeaten Rochester native won the title Thursday night before a cheering crowd of more than 5,000 at the Rochester Community War Memorial.
Murray (18-0, 12 knockouts) had never gone more than eight rounds before. But he threw quick combinations to Ward’s body and continually beat Ward, 25, of Lowell, Mass., to the punch.
