Kasparov Timeout Postpones Fifth Chess Game to Monday
Champion Garry Kasparov took one of his three allowed timeouts Friday, postponing Game 5 of the World Chess Championship series with challenger Anatoly Karpov until Monday.
Karpov used one of his timeouts last week, after suffering a defeat in Game 2.
Kasparov and Karpov agreed Thursday to a draw in the fourth game. The draw was initiated by Karpov a few hours after the game was adjourned.
Kasparov, who has remained on the attack throughout the match, leads with 2 1/2 points to Karpov’s 1 1/2 points. The victory in the second game was worth a full point to Kasparov. The other three games have been draws, worth half a point to each player.
Kasparov and Karpov are playing a 24-game series for the crown and a $3-million purse. They are scheduled to play on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with the first 12 games in New York and the rest in Lyon, France. The first player to reach 12 1/2 points wins.
