TENNIS ROUNDUP : McEnroe Is Upset by Jarryd Despite Support From Crowd
Unseeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden ousted second-seeded John McEnroe, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, Friday in the quarterfinals of the ATP CA Tennis Trophy at Vienna.
McEnroe appeared resigned to losing in the second set despite support from the capacity crowd. McEnroe complained that he had played two long matches in the last two days while Jarryd did not play.
But he also said that “I wasn’t in my rhythm in the first place. I missed way too many volleys.”
Jarryd will meet sixth-seeded Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union in the semifinals. Volkov needed a little more than an hour to defeat third-seeded Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-2, 6-1.
Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini overcame a sluggish start to beat Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 6-2, 6-7 (7-3), 6-2, and advance to the semifinals of the Porsche Cup at Filderstadt, Germany.
Mary Joe Fernandez, seeded second, rallied to beat unseeded Sabine Appelmans of Belgium.
