By halftime, No. 16 Oklahoma had an 11-point lead over Iowa State and had knocked the Cyclones’ top runner, Blaise Bryant, out of the game with injured ribs.

However, behind Chris Pedersen, Iowa State scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to shock the Sooners, 33-31, in a Big Eight game Saturday. Pedersen, who scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard sneak with 35 seconds left, rushed for 148 yards and also passed for one touchdown.

Iowa State, 3-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Big Eight, hadn’t beaten the Sooners (5-2, 2-1) since 1961. Before Saturday, Oklahoma held a 56-4-2 advantage in the series.

“I’m almost overwhelmed,” Iowa State Coach Jim Walden said. “I mean, this is a great, great football team. We had to play our guts out.”

Pedersen, a junior, hurt the Sooners time after time with quarterback draws and also with scrambles after being forced from the pocket.

Oklahoma opened leads of 14-0 and 28-14 in the first half and went into the locker room at halftime with a 28-17 lead. The Sooners still led, 31-20, after three quarters.

Sherman Williams, playing in place of Bryant in the second half, scored on a seven-yard run with 11:47 left in the game to make the score 31-26. That 80-yard, 15-play drive was kept alive on a fake punt, when Marv Seiler completed a 23-yard pass to Troy Moore.

Missing the two-point conversion after that touchdown could have been costly, since late in the game, Oklahoma drove to the Cyclones’ six-yard line. But R.D. Lashar missed a 23-yard field goal with 2:50 to play, a kick that would have given the Sooners an eight-point lead.

Iowa State started the winning drive at the 20. A big play came on fourth and eight when Pedersen gained 20 yards, moving the ball to the Cyclones’ 42.

A holding penalty against the Sooners gave Iowa State 10 more yards to the Oklahoma 48, and two plays later Pedersen passed to Chris Spencer for a 20-yard gain to the Oklahoma 24.

Pedersen then ran for 15 yards to the Sooner nine, and three plays later sneaked in. Oklahoma couldn’t get within field-goal range in the final seconds.
