1 Killed, 3 Seriously Injured in Santa Barbara Plane Crash
One person was killed and three others injured Sunday evening when a small plane crashed while attempting to land at Santa Barbara Municipal Airport, authorities said.
The single-engine Cessna 172 hit power lines before crashing about one mile east of the UC Santa Barbara campus in the community of Goleta, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m., came after the Cessna had been cleared for landing, said a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Los Angeles.
A woman believed to have been a UCSB student was dead on arrival at Goleta Valley Community Hospital, hospital officials said.
Another woman, about 26, possibly a student, was in critical condition with massive head and internal injuries, said hospital spokeswoman Melissa Seawards. A man about 24 was in very critical condition with massive head and internal injuries, she said.
Another man, about 35 to 40, sustained multiple fractures. He was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where he was in serious condition, said Bobbie Kline, a nursing supervisor.
The victims’ names were withheld pending notification of relatives.
